Torna-se então, perigoso e nocivo. Detestam o que não podem igualar, como se, apenas com existirem, os ofendesse. Sem asas para se elevarem até eles, decidem rebaixá-los: a exiguidade do próprio valor os induz a roer o mérito alheio.

Crava seus dentes em toda a reputação que os humilha, sem suspeitar que nunca é mais vil tal conduta humana. Basta esta característica para distinguir o doméstico do digno, o ignorante do sábio, o hipócrita do virtuoso, o vilão do cavalheiro,  os lacaios podem fuçar a fama; os homens excelentes não sabem envenenar a vida alheia.
