 O homem medíocre associa-se aos milhares para oprimir os que não comungam com a sua rotina. O homem medíocre evita píncaros e abismos. Intranquilo sob o sol meridiano e medroso durante a noite, procura seus arquétipos na penumbra. Teme a originalidade. O homem medíocre que, porventura, se aventura, tem apetites urgentes: o êxito. Não suspeita da existência de outra coisa que não o brilho do momento. O êxito é triunfo efêmero, a gloria é definitiva, perene. O êxito se mendiga, a glória se conquista.

Ingenieros diz que a mediocridade é mais contagiosa do que o talento. Pela simples rao que o talento incomoda, ninguém gosta nem procura o desconforto. O homem sem ideais e visões faz da sorte um oficio, da ciência um comercio, da filosofia um instrumento, da virtude uma empresa, da caridade uma festa, do prazer sensualismo. Conduz à ostentação, à avareza, à falsidade, à avidez, à simulação. O medíocre gosta das crises, pois só aí ele pode brilhar.

O homem medíocre é rotineiro, honesto, manso; pensam com a cabeça dos outros, condividem a hipocrisia moral alheia. Sua amizade é uma complacência servil, ou uma adulação proveitosa.

O medíocre se vangloria de sua prudência, a aventura, seja de que natureza for, é sempre, para ele, um risco desnecessário, mesmo que importe em progresso pessoal ou coletivo, porém, a excessiva prudência dos medíocres paralisou sempre as iniciativas mais fecundas.

Um dos sentimentos que mais se aproxima da mediocridade é a inveja. Trata-se de um sentimento torpe, um dos vícios que causa mais mal à humanidade. O invejoso se coloca como cães de guarda, sempre alerta ao menor ruído. Basta alguém se destacar em alguma área, por mais ínfima que seja e lá estará o invejoso, pronto para apontar o dedo e tentar minimizar o feito de seu próximo.

Segundo Inginieros, a inveja é uma adoração dos homens pelas sombras, do mérito pela mediocridade. É o rubor da face sonoramente esbofeteada pela glória alheia. É a grilheta que arrastam os falhados. É o trago amargo dos impotentes. É um venenoso humor que jorra das feridas abertas pelo desengano da própria insignificância.

Toda a psicologia da inveja está sintetizada numa fábula, digna de ser incluída nos livros de leitura infantil. Um sapo barrigudo coaxava num lodaçal, quando viu resplandecer no alto de umas pedras um pirilampo. Certo de que nenhum ser tinha direito de exibir qualidades que ele próprio jamais possuiria, e mortificado pela sua própria impotência, saltou sobre ele e cobriu-o com o ventre gelado. Por que me tapas? Ousou perguntar-lhe o inocente pirilampo. E o sapo, congestionado pela inveja, só soube responder com esta pergunta: E tu, por que brilhas?

 É interessante como o invejoso não suporta ver nenhuma pessoa no espaço que ele julga ser seu. Se sente atingido, usurpado e se agarra, com unhas e dentes, ao espaço que ele acha que é somente dele. Uma sutileza interessante, já que o homem pré-histórico, movido pelo instinto brutal, destroçava o seu algoz, a fim de se apropriar de seus pertences.

 O invejoso passa para o boicote, vai minando com fofocas e pequenas atitudes estrategicamente montadas, a fim de destruir o outro.

A inveja é uma confissão de inferioridade. Uma das coisas mais tristes da inveja é a sua pequenez: o estrito espaço dentro do qual ela se move. Ser invejoso é girar, eternamente, com um rato preso numa gaiola, dentro do alto-raio da maldade. A inveja nasce na incapacidade própria.
